James Joseph Brown (Barnwell, Carolina del Sur, 3
de mayo de 1933 - Atlanta, Georgia, 25 de diciembre de 2006) fue un
cantante de soul, funk y rock estadounidense, conocido también como
"Soul Brother Number One", "Mr. Dynamite", "The Hardest-Working Man in
Show Business", "Minister of The New Super-Heavy Funk", "Universal
James", pero quizá su sobrenombre más famoso sea "The Godfather of Soul"
(El Padrino del Soul).

"Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" es una canción escrita por James Brown. Lanzada como un sencillo a partir de 1965, siendo la primera canción de Brown en alcanzar el Billboard Hot 100, al colocarse en el puesto #8. También se convirtió en un #1 del R&B Charts, durante ocho semanas.
Se considera la primera grabación para showcase lo que más adelante se convirtió en el estilo musical de las canciones de Brown, y "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" se convirtió en el principio del desarrollo del género conocido más tarde como funk.
El tema con una duración de 2:07 minutos fue grabado en el Arthur Smith Studio en Charlotte, Carolina del Norte y promocionado oficialmente a partir de junio de 1965 por King Records.
