Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show (abreviado como Dr. Hook en 1975) fue una banda de rock estadounidense formada en Union City, Nueva Jersey. La banda tuvo éxito comercial en la década de 1970 con los exitosos sencillos "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (ambos de 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman"(1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979) y "Sexy Eyes" (1980). Además de su propio material, Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show interpretaron canciones escritas por el poeta Shel Silverstein.
La banda tuvo ocho años de éxitos en los Estados Unidos, donde su música se tocó en el Top 40, fácil de escuchar y en los medios de música country en todo el mundo de habla inglesa. Su música incluía canciones novedosas, baladas acústicas y rock suave.
El núcleo fundador de la banda estaba formado por George Cummings, Ray Sawyer y Billy Francis, quienes habían trabajado juntos en una banda llamada Chocolate Papers. Cummings, Sawyer y Francis comenzaron una nueva banda e incluyeron al vocalista principal Dennis Locorriere, quien inicialmente se unió como bajista.
La nueva banda se llamó Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show: Tonic for the Soul. El nombre se inspiró en el parche en el ojo de Sawyer y en una referencia al Capitán Garfio del cuento de hadas de Peter Pan. Sawyer perdió su ojo derecho en un accidente automovilístico casi fatal en Oregón en 1967 y, a partir de entonces, usó un parche en el ojo.
La banda se disolvió en 1985.

"When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (Cuando estás enamorado de una hermosa mujer) es un sencillo de éxito internacional de Dr. Hook. Fue grabado en Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, Alabama.
Fue escrita por Even Stevens, quien siguió al productor Ron Haffkine hasta el baño del estudio para presentarle la canción. "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" apareció por primera vez en el álbum de 1978 de la banda, "Pleasure and Pain".
Montando la ola disco en 1979, tardíamente se convirtió en un éxito internacional, alcanzando el número seis en la lista de sencillos Billboard Hot 100 en noviembre de 1979.
